Efforts to remove the pollutants and to stop further pollution have been started but it needs massive human, technical and financial resources. The River and its tributaries pass through Nairobi Province which is the Kenyan Capital and flows through the Central Business District.
At its source the water is sparkling clean Its main tributaries are: Ngong, Nairobi and Mathare. The tributaries join east of Nairobi and later join the river Athi, before flowing into the Indian Ocean. For people living along the River, the situation is critical. It is sad.
The only water is filled with life threatening pollutants and stinking refuse. Human waste and foul smelling muck flow freely. It has acted for many years as a major depository for waste from both domestic and often the more dangerous industrial sources.
