Having no other alternatives, residents have organised themselves and contributed money to pay for the digging of wells. Most of the boreholes are dug manually by 'experienced' borehole diggers usually fetched from rural area. Hiring a borehole driller would be another story, requiring huge amounts of money.
The Nairobi Water Company, the authority responsible for the supplying of water to the city, is surpassed by the demand of water. Residential areas are rapidly growing putting up stress on the water supplier. With the recent rain failures and interference of the water catchments areas the situation may not get any better. Nairobi is the largest city in East Africa and the 13th in the whole of Africa with a population of more than 2.7 million people.

Water minister Charity Ngilu last week said Kenya is one of the most water-poor nations on earth! The irony of this damning revelation is that Kenya is also one of the few countries endowed with more than enough water resources. Clearly, we have not been good custodians of these resources.
